Swearing in of New Officers - July 15, 2008:
Recruits Peter Robinson and Steve Kim were sworn in as new officers by Chief Adams.
Reception for the New Executive Director of the Glendale Community Foundation - July 10, 2008:
The Chief attended the event to meet and greet Edna Karinski.
Independent Cities Association Seminar - July 10, 2008:
Chief Adams attended the seminar with members of City Council.
PATROL RELATED INCIDENTS
Metrolink Verdict and Penalty Proceedings – July 15, 2008:
Three and a half years after the worst tragedy in the history of Glendale, a Los Angeles County Jury has returned with a guilty verdict against Mr. Juan Manual Alvarez. He was convicted of eleven counts of murder and one count of arson. The Jury also returned with eleven life sentences without the possibility of parole. Chief Adams attended the proceedings on the final day and thanked the District Attorney’s Office, the jury, congratulated police personnel and greeted family members of the victims.
District Attorney Steve Cooley was quoted, “Given the human suffering and loss of life inflicted by Mr. Alvarez, this case was appropriately put before the jury for a penalty decision. Great credit should go to the Glendale Police Department investigators and Deputy District Attorneys Mr. John Monaghan and Ms. Cathryn Brougham of the Major Crimes Division.”
Rolling Stolen - Monday, July 14, 2008:
Officer Deharo received a hit on the ALPRS of a stolen Infinity FX. He confirmed the plate was stolen via dispatch. A felony stop was conducted and the suspect was taken into custody without incident. Access cards and identity profiles belonging to various individuals were also recovered. Financial Crimes will handle the follow-up investigation.
Taser Deployed - Saturday, July 12, 2008:
A vehicle made an illegal U-turn out of a DUI Checkpoint and proceeded southbound at the 2 Freeway. While on the freeway the left passenger threw a cup out the window. Officer Bolton attempted to stop the vehicle which exited at York Street.
Officer Bolton contacted the driver and the left rear passenger who became very aggravated and refused commands. Officer Bolton requested assistance and assisting officers were dispatched.
The rear passenger reached under the seat and was therefore asked to exit the vehicle. The passenger then attempted to reach in his waistband but was immediately taken to the ground by the officers in fear he may have a weapon. The passenger continued to refuse commands from the officers and therefore he was drive stunned once with a Taser.
The suspect was handcuffed and placed in the back of a police unit. While in the back of the police unit the suspect was able to get his hands to the front of his body and attempted to reach out the window and open the door. The suspect was removed from the vehicle and hobbled. The suspect was arrested for disorderly conduct and for resisting arrest.
The suspect has been arrested on numerous occasions by the Glendale Police Department for resisting arrest, burglary, assault, injuring family member, carrying loaded weapon, vandalism, and grand theft.
Officer Assaulted - Saturday, July 12, 2008:
An officer was transporting a DUI suspect to Glendale Memorial to obtain a blood sample when the suspect attempted to kick out the windows of the police vehicle while being transported. Additional officers responded and subdued the female suspect.
While at the hospital, the suspect turned combative and kicked the officer twice in the groin. Hospital staff witnessed the assault. The suspect was transported and booked for felony assault on a police officer, criminal threats, and driving under the influence.
Arrests and Use of Force - Friday, July 4, 2008:
Officers responded to an unknown problem on Porter Street. The initial investigation revealed that several neighbors got involved in a dispute which led to a fight. Officers requested assistance and the situation was brought under control. Five people were arrested for battery.
Stabbing - Friday, July 4, 2008:
Officers were dispatched to Gardena Street regarding a stabbing at the location. The suspect was said to be on the roof. Officer Schmit was the first one to arrive on scene and discovered the suspect was in the process of climbing down from the roof. The suspect then fled around the back of the building ignoring Officer Schmit. The building was quickly contained.
Witnesses reported seeing the suspect going upstairs to the third floor. Shortly thereafter, the suspect was discovered hiding in a laundry room where he apparently locked himself in. After officers gained entry, the suspect submitted to arrest. A bloody knife was found on his person.
The victim suffered superficial wounds on back of his neck and right collarbone. He also suffered a deep stab wound to his right forearm. His wounds were not life threatening and were treated by the Glendale Fire Department. The suspect was booked for Assault with a Deadly Weapon.
Burglary - Thursday, July 3, 2008:
Officers responded to a report of burglary in progress at the Public Storage located at 4820 San Fernando Road. The reporting party, who lives on site, heard glass break and called the Glendale Police Department. On arrival, officers saw that the glass window to the business had been broken and entry was made. An unknown amount of cash was taken. Broken glass and blood was located on scene. The area was taped off as a crime scene and the Glendale Police Forensics Unit was called.
Armed Robbery - Wednesday, July 2, 2008”
A woman was the victim of an Armed Robbery at Grover and Glenoaks. The victim said her purse was snatched from her right hand, and her wallet was pulled out of her hand.
The victim described the suspect as a male about 25-30 years of age, either Hispanic or Middle Eastern, approximately 5' 6'' tall, medium built, wearing blue jeans, a red tank top, a blue baseball cap, and tennis shoes. The victim said she really didn't see his face or hair, as the cap was pulled down low on his head.
After the male snatched the wallet from her hand, he ran eastbound on the sidewalk back towards Grover Ave. When he got to the corner, he made a right turn and ran away southbound on Grover Ave. and out of sight. The victim said she did not think he got into a car, but simply escaped on foot. Robbery will handle the follow up investigation.
Lojack Hit and Grand Theft Auto Arrest - Tuesday, July 1, 2008:
Officers received a Lojack activation. Officer Parseghian broadcasted the information to all the patrol units, which led to locating the vehicle parked on the street. Patrol units began a surveillance of the vehicle until Auto Theft/Burglary Detectives arrived in unmarked cars and took over the surveillance. A driver returned to the vehicle and was apprehended by the Detectives and Agent Aliaga. Great teamwork led to the recovery of a 2004 black Range Rover.
TRAFFIC RELATED INCIDENTS
Sobriety Checkpoint - Sunday, July 13, 2008:
A sobriety checkpoint was deployed at Colorado and Campus. A total of 1474 vehicles passed through the checkpoint, and of those 625 were screened. The following enforcement action was taken: Two arrests for Driving Under Influence, nine Field Sobriety Tests were administered, six arrests for driving without a license, one arrest for driving on a suspended license, three arrests for possession of an open container, one arrest on possession of marijuana, two warrant arrests, eight vehicles were towed and ten citations were issued.
Traffic Collision/ Pedestrian Struck - Saturday, July 12, 2008:
A 58 year old male was struck by a vehicle when he was crossing Columbus and Hawthorne. The victim complained of pain to his left ankle and lower back. He was transported to Glendale Adventist.
Traffic Collision/ Pedestrian Struck - Thursday, July 10, 2008:
Two vehicles, one traveling northbound and one traveling southbound struck each other at Brand and Colorado. The southbound vehicle careened into the parking lot on the southwest corner striking a female pedestrian in front of the Beef Bowl. The female was transported to LACUSC Medical Center.
Traffic Collision / Pedestrian Struck - Monday, July 7, 2008:
A 49 year old female riding a bicycle was struck by a vehicle as she was traveling eastbound on Golf Club Dr. The female (bicyclist) sustained a compound fracture to her left elbow and lacerations to her right leg. The female was transported to Huntington Memorial for treatment.
Sobriety Checkpoint - Sunday, July6, 2008:
An “Avoid the 40” roving DUI patrol was deployed on Saturday evening. The task force consisted of six officers from the Glendale Police Department, San Marino Police Department and the California Highway Patrol, (Altadena Station). The following enforcement action occurred: Twenty three traffic stops, seven field sobriety tests, one, one day impound, one DUI arrest, two arrests for possession of marijuana, one arrest for unlicensed driver, one arrest for driving on a suspended license, and nine citations for infractions.
Traffic Collision / Pedestrian Struck - Wednesday, July 2, 2008:
An 83 year old female pedestrian was struck by a vehicle as she crossed Central and California in a marked crosswalk. The pedestrian complained of pain in her legs. She was transported to LACUSC Medical Center for treatment. The Traffic Bureau and patrol personnel responded to investigate.
