Housing Programs

Most types of rental housing, including apartments, single family dwellings, condominiums and townhouses qualify for the program. The rent must be reasonable in relation to the area rents, and the dwelling is inspected to ensure it meets building and safety housing quality standards.

Unless the assisted lease was effective prior to June 17, 1998, the owner may not be a parent, child, grandparent, grandchild, sister or brother of the assisted family. The program may waive this restriction as a reasonable accommodation for a family member who is a person with a disability.

Under no circumstances may the owner of the property reside with the assisted family in the unit, even if the owner is a live-in attendant to an assisted member of the family who is a person with a disability.

A rental owner may be ineligible to participate in the program if the owner has a history or practice of renting units that fail to meet State or local housing codes, or where the owner has not paid State or local real estate taxes, fines or assessments.
