Bethune Theatredanse Celebrates 30th Anniversary
Four Performances of "Silent Roar”
WHAT:
Bethune Theatredanse will celebrate its 30th anniversary with four performances of "Silent Roar," a multimedia production of dance, music, video, special effects, and art. The presentation, a contemporary reprise first performed by the group in 1997, is written, directed, and choreographed by company Artistic Director Zina Bethune.
“Silent Roar” chronicles the plight of a migrating young grey whale separated from his family and the ensuing friendship he forms with a disabled boy on the southern California coastline. Inspired by and utilizing the artwork of renowned artist Wyland, the storyline dramatizes the similarity of marine mammals to humans, and how their ultimate fate is intertwined with our own. The young boy will be portrayed by a disabled performer.
Wyland’s paintings, murals and video art will be projected throughout the performance, as innovative sound effects, enhanced by composer Zeljko Marasovich’s original score, re-create the exquisite but turbulent sounds of the ocean world. Avalon Club VJ Marc McCall oversees the multimedia design. Todd Hillman serves as video effects designer. Set design is by Adam Flemming. Actor William Allen Young will play himself in a video created for the production. Lighting design is by Steven Young.
